Skip the line and head up to the fortress. Hohensalzburg Fortress is the third most visited attraction in Austria, and many visitors take the fortress railway up. Therefore, it is recommended to obtain fortress tickets online in advance.

At the Festungsbahn

The comfortable way to get to the fortress is by taking the fortress’ funicular. From the valley station at Festungsgasse 4, you will arrive at the top of Hohensalzburg Fortress after barely a minute of travel time. This is how most visitors get to the fortress – so it can happen that you have to wait in line to buy tickets.

Up to the Fortress by Foot

Via the partially very steep footpath, but with beautiful views of Salzburg and the fortress, you can also easily reach the fortress. On foot, you can also reach the fortress most quickly from Salzburg’s old town via Festungsgasse. The entrance fee to the fortress is paid at the second archway on the way up.

Included in the Salzburg Card

For those who want to see more of Salzburg, there is the Salzburg Card: With it, you get access to all the sights and museums in the city of Salzburg – so also with the fortress railway up to and into the fortress. The Salzburg Card can be purchased online in advance or at several sales points in and around Salzburg.
